Power Automate editor freezing/crashing (large flow)

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working on a fairly large and complex flow in Power Automate and I’m running into a serious issue within the editor.

The flow has grown significantly in size (multiple branches, conditions, approvals, etc.), and now I’m experiencing the following behavior:

  • When opening the editor of my flow, the page becomes/reacts very slow
  • In almost all of the SharePoint-actions it says "Invalid parameters" while it is trying to connect to the SharePoint-site that is configured
  • After ~30–60 seconds (and before all SharePoint-actions could connect to the site), the browser tab freezes
  • Shortly after, the tab crashes (see screenshot, error code: STATUS_BREAKPOINT)

This makes it impossible to continue working on or modifying the flow.

The issue seems to be related to the size and complexity of the flow.

The flow contains approximately 250 actions in total, of which around 100 are SharePoint-related actions.

Note: This setup was working until recently. It was already quite slow, but still usable and did not crash. After making some changes and adding additional actions to the flow, this issue started occurring.

What I’ve already tried:

  • Different browsers (Edge, Chrome)
  • Different users trying to edit the flow
  • Closing other tabs/applications
  • Stable internet connection
  • Opening the edit flow page and just waiting without any interaction, hoping that it will not crash

Unfortunately, the behavior remains the same.

My questions:

  • Is there a known limitation regarding flow size/complexity in the Power Automate editor?
  • Are there best practices for handling large flows to avoid performance issues like this?
  • Has anyone experienced similar problems and found a reliable workaround?
  • Would upgrading from "Power Automate Free" to a higher-tier/more-premium plan have any impact on editor performance?

I would really appreciate any insights or recommendations.

Thanks in advance!

    Hi there!

The best options I can suggest are as follows:

Open your flow in classic editor mode.  When you open the flow, in the top right you will see the classic button to switch.  If you can't even get that far at the end of the URL to edit your flow, remove the ?v3=true at the end of the URL or set to false.  Your best option is to get into classic mode.

Here comes the hard part:  you have way too many actions in your flow.  You need to make this a solution and break your flow into flows and child flows.  While someone can probably argue there are exceptions, in general terms, you should not have 250 actions in a single flow.  When you are working inside a solution, you can call child flows and essentially break this flow into a minimum of 5-10 separate flows.

What's the easiest way to copy large chunks of your flow?  I typically use a scope and move sections of the flow into scopes, then it is easy to copy the entire scope and paste it into your child flows.

Making these change makes your solution a functional automation that is dependable.

Oh wow, thanks for the advice!
Now I can finally see the flow without it crashing again :D

As for breaking the flow into 5-10 seperate flows, I will have to find a way to make it as balanced as possible.
Using the scopes will definitely help me.
    I will try it :)

    Thanks again! 💯
