Is it possible in PAD to close a tab that is created in Microsoft Edge?

Example:

  1. I navigate to a specific URL.

  2. On that page, I fill in a number of values and click the Submit button.

  3. A new tab opens as a result of the actions in step 2 above.

  4. I want to close the first page, which created the second tab.

  5. I know the URL to step 1 above. I don't know the dynamic created URL to the second tab.

  6. Only two pages exist: one from the first URL and the dynamically created tab.

  7.

So how do I close the first page so that I’m left only with the page in the dynamically created tab?

I have the same question (0)

Yes — this is absolutely possible in Power Automate for desktop with Microsoft Edge.

    Since:
    • you know the original page URL,
    • only two tabs exist,
    • the second tab is dynamically created,
the easiest and most reliable approach is:
    • Switch to the original tab using its known URL, then close the active tab.
Since you know the original URL:

    Best Approach
    • Focus original tab using URL
    Use:
    • Close web browser tab
    • This leaves only the dynamically generated tab open.
    • That is the cleanest and most reliable solution in PAD.

Here are the exact steps in PAD:

    1. After your submit action opens the new tab, add a Switch to browser tab action
       - Instance: your browser variable (e.g. Browser)
       - Tab: select By URL
       - URL: paste the original URL from step 1
    2. This switches focus back to the original tab.
    3. Add a Close browser tab action
       - Instance: same browser variable
       - Leave everything else default

This closes the currently focused tab (the original one), leaving only the dynamically created tab open.
Note: the Switch to browser tab by URL does a contains match so you don't need the exact full URL, just enough of it to uniquely identify the original tab.

Do you know the Title of the second page that opens dynamically? If so use "Launch new Microsoft Edge" -action and launch mode use "Attach to running instance" and Match mode "By title". Then select the Tab title or write it with Regex.

Or try using "Use foreground window" attach mode. Then just make sure the second page is always on the foreground.

Then you should be able to just use "Close web browser" -action and close the original page (by default its %Browser% -instance).
Then attach the new opened tab/window to new browser instance so that you can use browser automation actions on that browser window.

    Essentially like so:

So the second action there opens a new tab and then the flow attaches that tab to new %Browser% -instance. Then you can just close the original browser instance since that's pointing to the original page which opened the new tab. So then just the %Browser2% instance will be left.
