Account type used: learnwithpowerup.onmicrosoft.com (Microsoft 365 developer tenant)
What happened: Signed in, OneDrive auto-synced my local PC folders
Current status: Files appear in OneDrive cloud under that tenant
Concern: I don’t own/control this tenant
What I need: Safe steps to copy files back locally and remove account without losing data

    • Ensure all files are fully downloaded locally:

      • Open your OneDrive folder on your PC.

      • Right-click the OneDrive folder or specific files/folders and select "Always keep on this device". This forces OneDrive to download all files fully to your local disk.

    • Verify local copies:

      • Confirm that files have the green checkmark icon indicating they are stored locally and available offline.

    • Copy files to a separate local folder (optional but recommended):

      • To be extra safe, copy the entire OneDrive folder (or important files) to another location on your PC outside the OneDrive sync folder (e.g., C:\Backup\OneDriveFiles). This ensures you have a backup independent of OneDrive sync.

    • Unlink your OneDrive account from the PC:

      • Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray (bottom-right).

      • Go to Help & Settings > Settings > Account tab.

      • Click Unlink this PC or Unlink account.

      • Confirm unlinking. This stops syncing but does not delete your local files.

    • Confirm files remain on your PC:

      • After unlinking, your OneDrive folder remains on your PC with all files that were downloaded. Files marked as "Available on this device" stay accessible. Files marked "Online-only" will not be available offline anymore.

    • Remove OneDrive app or sign out (optional):

      • If you want, you can uninstall or disable OneDrive after unlinking. Your local files remain untouched.
