Power pages portal - Change password on first login

Hi all,

In my scenario, I'd like to have a control over the people who can access the power pages portal. I receive requests through mail for portal access, and I'd like to register the people myself, and then send out a link to the portal as well as account and password. But, I do not know how to enforce "change password on first login" or "force password change" because I want those who will access the site to be able to create their own password. The users of the portal are not members of my domain. Is it possible to do this at all?

Thanks,
Viktor

    Hi Viktor,

Yes, it's possible, but the approach depends on how users authenticate to your Power Pages site.
If you're using local authentication (username/password stored in the portal), you can create contacts and invite them through the Invitation mechanism rather than manually assigning passwords. This is generally the preferred approach because the user receives an invitation link and sets their own password during registration, eliminating the need for you to know or distribute passwords.
However, if you manually create local users and assign passwords yourself, Power Pages does not provide a built-in "force password change on first login" feature similar to what you might find in Active Directory. In that scenario, users would continue using the password you assigned until they voluntarily change it through the profile or password management pages.
    For external users, I'd recommend:
    • Create the Contact record.
    • Assign the appropriate web roles.
    • Send a Power Pages invitation.
    • Let the user create their own password during the invitation redemption process.
Even better, if your organization allows it, consider using an external identity provider such as Microsoft Entra ID B2B, where password management, password resets, MFA, and security policies are handled by the identity provider instead of Power Pages.
In short, there is no native "change password on first login" setting for local Power Pages accounts, but using the invitation process achieves the same goal by allowing the user to create their own password from the start.

    Thanks,
