Embedded Power BI Reports

ReportReport

Hi All

We are currently looking to embed a Power BI report in our Power Pages site. All the configuration has been completed per the docs and when using the Liquid tag with type "AAD", the report loads after sign-in. However, we want to use 'Embed for your customers' as they'll be our external Portal users (the third option, open access, isn't appropriate given the nature of the data). When setting the type to 'embedded' in the Liquid tag, it returns a liquid syntax error. This occurs whether I add the code or it's added when component is selected via Studio.

I know the report URL is correct as it loads properly via the AAD type, and we've triple-checked all the config steps have been done.

My current thinking is that it's the missing PBI Embedded Licence - as the docs do say this is a requirement. Is this likely to be the issue, or are there any other known issues we may have missed?

    Hi @RK2021,

    Two things here.

First, the liquid syntax error is almost certainly the authentication_type value. Microsoft docs confirm the correct value is powerbiembedded not embedded. The tag should be:

    {% powerbi authentication_type:"powerbiembedded" path:"..." %}

If you or Studio are writing type:"embedded" that will throw a syntax error since it's not a valid value.

Second, yes the Power BI Embedded license (capacity) is a confirmed prerequisite. Microsoft docs state: "Enabling the Power BI Embedded service allows you to embed dashboards and reports created in the new workspace."
You need to enable the Power BI Embedded service in PPAC under your Power Pages site settings (Manage > Services > Manage Power BI Embedded), and that requires an actual Power BI Embedded capacity (A SKU, EM SKU, or Fabric F SKU) to be provisioned and associated. Without that, the service can't be enabled and the powerbiembedded auth type won't work.

So fix 1 first (check the exact value in the Liquid tag), then confirm the Embedded service is enabled in PPAC.

      Best regards,

Since the report renders successfully using type:"AAD", your report URL and basic Power Pages configuration appear to be correct. I recommend:
    • Verify the exact Liquid tag syntax for type:"embedded" against the Microsoft documentation.
    • Confirm that all required parameters for the embedded scenario are included.
    • Ensure you have a Power BI Embedded capacity and that the workspace containing the report is assigned to it.
    • If the syntax is correct and the license is in place but the error persists, capture the full Liquid error message and browser console logs, as this may indicate a known product issue or a limitation in the current Power Pages implementation.
If you can share the Liquid tag you're using (redacting any sensitive values), I can review it and identify whether the syntax is correct.
