Hello,

We currently have a Dataverse Capacity Extension running as we work to reduce the data saved. We were wondering about the extension availability. On the Licensing > Dataverse > Summary > Storage Add-ons to enable the extension, it notes "You have enabled 1 out of 3 capacity extensions in the last 365 days. You have 2 capacity extension remaining."

I wanted to ask specifically about the "in the last 365 days" timeline. Does this mean that after the 365 days after the extension was enabled (e.g. 9/18/2026) we will regain that extension? Or is there a limit to the capacity extensions? For example, if we use all 3 capacity extensions, can we never extend capacity again?

I tried to find information on Microsoft Learn, but could not find detailed information about how the extension limit and what the 365 days was relative to.

Hello @NM-11092310-0 - Yes, based on Microsoft's current documentation, the limit is three capacity extensions within the last 365 days. Each extension lasts for 45 days, and another extension can only be requested after the current one expires.
The "last 365 days" wording indicates a rolling window. For example, if your first extension was enabled on September 18, 2026, once that extension activation falls outside the previous 365-day period, it should no longer count toward the three-extension limit.

Your organization can request an extension a maximum of three times in the last 365 days. So it does not appear to be limited to three extensions for the lifetime of the tenant.

Use the extension as a temporary safety buffer, while continuing the Dataverse storage reduction/archiving exercise. I would not design the storage strategy assuming that extensions will always be available.

Also, because this is a licensing/entitlement behavior and Microsoft can change licensing terms, for a production capacity-planning decision I would confirm the current entitlement with Microsoft Support or your Microsoft licensing representative.

The "3 in the last 365 days" wording means this is a rolling 365-day limit, not a lifetime limit.

Microsoft currently documents that a tenant can request a capacity extension a maximum of 3 times in the last 365 days. Each extension provides an additional 25% of capacity and is available for up to 45 days.

So, for example, if your tenant uses an extension on 18 September 2026, that extension counts toward the 3-extension limit for the following 365-day window. As older extension events move outside that 365-day window, they no longer count toward the limit and another extension can become available.

This means:

It is NOT "only 3 extensions ever."

It is a maximum of 3 extension requests within the rolling 365-day period.

Each individual extension is temporary and lasts up to 45 days.

The extension is tenant-level, rather than specific to one environment.

The purpose is to give you temporary time to reduce storage usage or purchase additional capacity.

One important point: I would not interpret the 365 days as meaning that the current extension itself lasts 365 days. The extension lasts 45 days; the 3-extension limit is measured over the previous 365 days.

So if you eventually consume all 3 available extensions, you would need to wait until one of those extension events falls outside the rolling 365-day window before that extension slot becomes available again.

For production use, I would still treat the extension as a temporary buffer rather than a recurring storage strategy. Microsoft recommends reducing consumption or purchasing additional Dataverse capacity when you're consistently over the entitlement.
