Copilot Studio GCC – Dataverse Knowledge Source Ready but Not Retrieving Multiline Text Content

Hello,

I am experiencing an issue with Copilot Studio in a GCC tenant where a Dataverse knowledge source shows a status of Ready, but the agent is not able to retrieve or answer questions based on content stored in a Dataverse Multiline Text column.

Environment

  • Tenant type: GCC
  • Product: Microsoft Copilot Studio
  • Knowledge source: Dataverse
  • Authentication: Authenticate with Microsoft
  • Dataverse Search: Enabled
  • Agent: Published
  • User permissions: Full access to the Dataverse table and data

Dataverse table design

I have a custom Dataverse table with the following columns:

  • Name – Primary/index column
  • Data – Multiple Lines of Text / MemoType

The Data column contains the extracted text from a Word document. The document contains information related to an internal website.

For a simple test, the Data column contains content similar to:

What is your favorite color? The answer is red.

I do not want to change the table design because, in the actual implementation, the Data column will contain the full textual content of Word documents.

Dataverse Search configuration

The custom table is configured for Dataverse Search.

In the table's Quick Find View:

  • Name is included in View Columns
  • Name is included in Find By
  • Data is included in View Columns
  • Data is included in Find By

I have verified that Dataverse Search itself is working correctly.

For example, if I search Dataverse for:

favorite color

the correct row is returned successfully.

Therefore, the content inside the Multiline Text column appears to be indexed and searchable by Dataverse.

Copilot Studio configuration

I added the custom Dataverse table as a knowledge source in Copilot Studio.

The Dataverse knowledge source successfully completes processing and shows:

Status: Ready

The agent uses:

Authenticate with Microsoft

I have also published the agent and started a new test conversation.

However, when I ask:

What is your favorite color?

the agent does not retrieve the Dataverse content and does not answer red.

What has already been verified

The following items have already been checked:

  • Dataverse Search is enabled
  • The custom table is searchable
  • The Multiline Text column is searchable
  • The Multiline Text column is included in Quick Find "Find By"
  • The Multiline Text column is included in Quick Find "View Columns"
  • Dataverse global search successfully finds text stored inside the column
  • The Copilot Studio Dataverse knowledge source shows "Ready"
  • The agent uses Microsoft authentication
  • The authenticated user has permission to read the table and record
  • The agent has been published
  • The knowledge source has been removed and re-added for testing

Question

Can Microsoft or the community confirm whether Copilot Studio Dataverse Knowledge supports retrieval and generative answering from Dataverse Multiline Text (MemoType) columns in GCC tenants?

Specifically, I am trying to determine whether the following capability is currently available in GCC:

Copilot Studio → Dataverse Knowledge → Unstructured reasoning/search over Multiline Text (MemoType) column content

Dataverse Search itself can successfully retrieve the content, but Copilot Studio does not appear to use that content when generating an answer.

I would also like to know whether this is:

  1. A known limitation in GCC
  2. A feature that has not yet been deployed to GCC
  3. A known issue with Dataverse Knowledge and MemoType columns
  4. Or if there is an additional Copilot Studio configuration required

Any confirmation from Microsoft regarding GCC support for Dataverse Multiline Text knowledge retrieval would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Krupa

    Hi,

A few things come to mind based on what you've already tested.

Since Dataverse Search can find the content, but the agent cannot answer from it, the issue is likely not indexing. The gap appears to be between Dataverse Search and what Copilot Studio's Dataverse knowledge retrieval layer is actually using.

    For troubleshooting, I'd check:
    • Whether the content is returned when searching by a unique phrase from the Data column rather than asking a natural language question.
    • Whether a small amount of text in the Name column is retrievable while the MemoType column is not.
    • Whether the same configuration works in a commercial tenant, which would help determine if this is GCC-specific.
    • Whether the agent's conversation diagnostics show any Dataverse knowledge retrieval occurring at all.

From what you've described, this does resemble either:
    • A GCC feature parity gap,
    • A current limitation with Dataverse knowledge retrieval over large Multiline Text (MemoType) fields,
    • Or a product issue where the knowledge source reaches Ready but the MemoType content is not being used for grounding.

Since you've already validated search, security, publishing, authentication, Quick Find configuration, and re-indexing, I'd be leaning toward a platform limitation or product issue rather than a configuration problem. If anyone has this working in GCC with unstructured content stored exclusively in MemoType columns, I'd be interested to hear that as well.

    Thanks & Regards,
