Dataverse Security and SharePoint Integration

Hello I am researching using Dataverse and model drive apps. I am also exploring the security model you can have in Dataverse.

My question is how does Dataverse security model tie into SharePoint integration in model driven apps?

Will the associated SharePoint library have to be free and open to everyone?

What about record level security?
I have the same question (0)

Hello @FW-07051511-0 - In Dataverse, record-level security is managed through security roles. Security roles consist of privileges and access levels. Please refer to the high-level overview below for the different access levels:.
    • Organization - A user with this access level can access all records
    • Parent: Child Business Unit: A user with this access level can access records in their business unit as well as to their subordinate business units
    • Business Unit: A user can access records only in their business unit
    • User - A user with this access level can access records they own, records shared with them, and records owned by teams they belong to.
    • None: No Access is allowed
How can get security model details from Microsoft's official documentation.

SharePoint also has its own security model. However, unlike Dataverse's record-level access model, SharePoint permissions are generally managed at the site, list/library, folder, and item/file levels. Please refer to the documentation below for more details.

Lastly, to answer your question about how the Dataverse and SharePoint security models work together during integration:
If a user has Read permission for a record in Dataverse and needs to view the associated documents stored in SharePoint, they also need the appropriate permissions for document management in Dataverse and access to the corresponding SharePoint location. Having access to the Dataverse record alone does not automatically grant access to the documents stored in SharePoint.
The same principle applies to other operations: the user needs the appropriate permissions in both Dataverse and SharePoint for the operation they are trying to perform.

Lastly, if my answer helped you to understand or give you a clue to further get the details then please mark the answer as verified. This way you're helping the community members to quickly navigate the answer.

No, the SharePoint library does not have to be open to everyone. However, Dataverse security and SharePoint security are separate security models. Dataverse

record-level security does not automatically become SharePoint document-level security.

    The principle is:

Dataverse protects the business data; SharePoint protects the documents.

Don't assume one security model automatically protects the other.

    Simple rule to remember
    Dataverse security answers:

"Can this user access this business record?"

    SharePoint security answers:

"Can this user access this document?"

The model-driven app brings the two experiences together, but the underlying authorization models remain separate.

    in Dataverse:
Record-level security determines which specific records a user can access and what they can do with those records. It is one of the key mechanisms that allows different users to work with the same model-driven application while seeing only the business data they are authorized to access.
