Hiya!
First time on a community platform, so please be gentle… Autistic ADHDer combo here! That means I’m generally lovely—unless I’m overwhelmed, overstimulated, or hyper-fixating on my latest obsession, in which case, expect malfunctioning robot energy, awkwardness, and direct communication. I promise, the awkwardness is endearing, and the intentions are usually good! 😅
I’m looking for some practical advice, as I’m currently butting my head against a brick wall (don’t worry, I’m wearing a helmet). I’m a Data Analyst, but my organisation has locked down most Power Platform and Fabric capabilities for non‑IT staff. Right now, I can’t create my own Power BI workspace, use Fabric items, or explore Power Apps and Power Automate beyond the basics. All this while trying to keep up with the ever-mutating Copilot/Agents madness—it’s a wild ride!
I’ve just joined the Power Up Program and am eager to develop my skills—particularly in Power Apps, automation patterns, data modelling, and Fabric concepts. However, I learn best through hands-on experience, and with so many features blocked in our tenant, I keep running into obstacles.
What I’m looking for advice on:
- How do others upskill when their organisation has a highly restricted Power Platform environment?
- Are there safe, recommended ways to practise outside your main tenant?
- Any strategies for working with IT/admin teams to request access or demonstrate the business value? I did request some things as reasonable adjustments, and that got completely stomped on 😥
- Tips for learning Fabric concepts when you can’t use Fabric directly?
I’m eager to expand my skills, knowing there’s so much more I could contribute to my organisation. Unfortunately, it often feels like these opportunities are being gatekept from those of us outside IT. 🙈
Of course, I want to remain fully compliant with organisational policies and governance, but the guidelines are quite vague. Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
